Abigail Update

Friday, November 14, 1997

Abigail is getting a blood transfusion today.

Don't forget to give blood next time you have a chance!

Anemia is very common in premature babies, and Abby's iron count was a little bit low. According to one of the doctors in the NICU, about 90% of female preemies need a blood transfusion at some point during their hospital stay.

Abby is gaining weight pretty steadily -- she's up to 2 lbs. 0.5 oz. She's taking one cc of breast milk every 2 hours. The doctors had hoped that she would be back up to birth weight (2 lbs. 4 oz.) within 3 weeks -- so she's ahead of schedule.

The nurses said that out of 4 preemies born on November 4th, Abby is the second-best eater. Mommy, who ordered a not a salad... not a small frozen yogurt... but a Friendly's Jim Dandy on her first date with Daddy, said, "That's my girl!"
