Abigail Update
Saturday, January 17, 1998
Abigail Shannon Ryan came home on January 14, 1998!
This is about two weeks before she was supposed to come into the world!
After 10 weeks in the hospital, Abby was discharged on Wednesday. (As keeper of the Abby chronicles, I got a breathless call from Amy on the cell phone on the way to Syracuse, "The Doctor said to come and get her!")
This child has apparently inherited "the luck of the Irish" from her father's side of the family. Nana and Pop Ryan were married on the 14th of November, and Nana for some strange reason ;-) calls 14 her lucky number. Abby was born on November 4th (1-1-4) and came home on January 14th (1-1-4). Go figure!
The only gear that came home with the baby is her heart monitor -- just 2 sticky patches under her arms and alligator clips to connect the wires to the box. The monitor alerts Mom & Dad if Abby's heart rate slows down -- because of A&B. Jonathan says they have a dual warning system, because when the monitor chirps, Penny (the wonder dog) barks.
Penny seems to like the new addition. They have been bringing Abby's clothes home for her to sniff -- it seems she liked the dirty diaper best! Jon tells me the dog is very protective of the baby. She gets in close enough to sniff when Abby's taking her bottle, and once in a while she licks her foot.
Speaking of bottles, Abigail is eating every three hours. She had a visit with a local doctor on Thursday, and tipped the scales at 5 pounds! Of course, they weighed her receiving blanket and all, so Jonathan puts her at about 4 lbs. 12 oz.
With any luck, you will be able to see a video of Abby soon. We're working on making it happen even as I type.
Keep thinking good thoughts for the new family, and we'll keep you posted.
