Connecting to CRISNY via PPP...

You are now ready to connect to CRISNY via PPP. First, be sure that your modem is turned on.Then you can either 1) open the ConfigPPP Control Panel and click the Open button or 2) launch an Internet application such as Eudora or Netscape. Either way, FreePPP will start to dial into the CRISNY system. A dialog box will appear and display the status of the connection process, as shown in Figure 6.

Figure 6

If the process is successful, this dialog box will disappear and you are now on the Internet; this will be indicated by changes in the ConfigPPP Control Panel: the logo in the upper left corner will now read "PPP up" instead of "PPP down". Thus instead of the features seen on Figure 3 (repeated here on the left in Figure 7 for comparison), the Control Panel has the features seen on the right in Figure 7:

At this point you are connected, but it is up to you to launch one or more Internet tools to exploit this marvelous resource. For example, you can open PopMail II and check your mail ( see Setting up E-mail with PopMail II in the next section) or open Mosaic and check out our Web Pages or do both at the same time. To access a given Internet service, you simply need to open the correct tool.

Note that the foregoing description assumes you will follow the usual automatic procedure whereby FreePPP invokes the connect script and does all of the work. If for some reason you wish to use the manual connect procedure (eg, for troubleshooting), proceed as follows: Click on the Disable Auto Connect box and on theTerminal Window box (X appears in both boxes) and then click on Open in the ConfigPPP control panel; this displays a blank dialog box labeled " PPP terminal session ". Type atdt4466900 and hit return; the modem will dial and the message "Annex Username: " will appear. At this stage, the dialog box looks like Figure 8.

Figure 8
Type your username and hit return; the message " Annex Password: " will appear. Type your password and hit return; the Client System Menu with options 1 through 5 will be displayed, as will the message " Annex: " . The only usable option here is the PPP connection, option 2; type 2 and hit return. You'll see the message "Switching to PPP" and some scrambled text. Click on OK and the connection will be completed, displaying the same window as in the automatic procedure. It is suggested that (except in rare instances such as a one-time logon on another Mac) the manual connect be used only for diagnostic purposes.
