1. Open the Control Panel called ConfigPPP. You should see a panel like the one below.

Choose the port your modem is connected to from the pulldown menu under Port Name; the options are Modem Port and Printer Port. The rest of the settings (ie , the entries in the menu boxes) may be used as is. Now click on Config.... ; this action displays the following panel:

The first step is to set some options for your modem. The settings you may need to change in this panel to accomodate the characteristics of your modem and to maximize its rate of throughput are Port Speed and Modem Init; in order to automate the connection process it will be necessary to access another panel through the button Connect Script...
Because of the wide diversity of speeds and operational characteristics of modems, it is difficult to provide specific advice on these settings; a few general suggestions and cautions will be offered.
To set Port Speed, it is suggested that you first try a value equal to your modem's maximum connect rate. Then work your way up stepwise, trying to connect at each step, until you fail to connect. Then set Port Speed at the previous level; higher speeds enable you to take advantage of compression. For example, the setting shown in Figure 4 was used successfully for a 14400 bps modem. Note: Most modems do not work using 14400 or 28800bps settings as portspeed, so avoid these. Don't overdo this rate inflation, however; for example, using 330K for a 9600 modem could cause connect problems. Most users will probably find a ceiling to Port Speed of at most 57600bps. If you have a slow Macintosh you should not go above 38400.
To set Modem Init , you should first try the preset value ATZ as is; if a problem is encountered in connecting, try ATZ1. If a problem persists, try AT&F1 which is the factory configuration. If this doesn't work (possibly because your modem was not intended for Mac application), it may be necessary to re-configure your modem to install the correct factory settings.
At this point, you have configured the modem to connect to CRISNY via PPP. The next step is to automate the logon process; to do this, click on Connect Script... This displays a new panel, like the one shown on Figure 5, onto which you enter all data exactly as shown except use your username and password.

Now click on the "IPCP Options" button to set one last thing. You will see the screen below (Figure 6). Type the ip number 204.97.182.250 (the CRISNY server) into the Remote IP Address (see figure).

After entering the appropriate data, click on OK and then on Done. This completes the input of data required to configure FreePPP. To properly store the data and enable FreePPP to do its job, restart your Macintosh now!
