CRISNY Web Page Maintenance Guide

1. Introduction

The CRISNY Web Maintenance Guide is to be used by information providers and individual subscribers with Web pages on the CRISNY server. The guide gives instructions for the creation of simple Web pages, as well as how to maintain your Web pages. For instructions on how to create complex Web pages, you have several options:

Disclaimer:

In the Individual Homepage Directory listing, you will see the following disclaimer:

The links from this page are to the personal Homepages of CRISNY Subscribers. The content of these Homepages, including all text and graphics, and any opinions expressed therein are solely those of the Homepage creators. Comments should be directed to the creator of the Homepage.

CRISNY strongly suggests that you include an e-mail address on your Homepage, to facilitate contact with you.

2. CRISNY Web Page Hints

Images are the most disk space intensive. By keeping images small and simple, you will not only make the most of your Web space limit, but you will be creating Web pages that a home user can view over a 14,400 modem connection without spending their valuable on-line time waiting for images to download.

3. The CRISNY Web Server

All the necessary instructions for uploading your information will be provided in this document. The instructions assume that you have already created a Web page to work with. Refer back to the beginning of this document for your options regarding creating Web pages.

3.1 Uploading Your Web Page(s)

  1. Send e-mail to support@crisny.org to indicate that you wish to have your directory activated.
  2. Double check off-line that your Web page looks the way you intended and all external links are typed in correctly.
  3. After you receive confirmation from support@crisny.org that your directory is ready for uploading, use your FTP tool to open a connection to the host server ftp.knick.net. Sign on with your userid and password. You will, by default, be placed in your home directory on the Knick.net server.
  4. Transfer the homepage file you created to your Knick.net directory. When making the file transfer, change the filename of your Homepage to index.html.
  5. Close your FTP connection.

3.2 Linking Your Web Page

Email webmaint@crisny.org to indicate that you wish to have the link from our homepage directory to your homepage activated. Include the information required for your account type. (see below) A response will be mailed back to you, indicating that the link has been made. Please allow a few days turn around time.

3.3 Viewing Your Web Page

To view your homepage, use your Web browser to go to the appropriate address.

For individual user accounts: http://family.knick.net/username
For not for profit users: http://family.knick.net/username or http://www.crisny.org/not-for-profit/username

If you have any question concerning your web site address, please call (518) 454-5400.

3.4 Changing Your Web Page

Changes to your files must be made off-line. The entire file is then uploaded with the changes. It will replace the older version. You may make as many changes to your pages as you wish. Once the link has been made, and you have been given the ability to ftp, the maintenance of your page is entirely in your hands.
