BC-NY INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

As outlined below, the Battenkill Conservancy-New York provides the opportunity for college or graduate students to gain summer internship experience. (Students interested in regular semester or January Study internships are encouraged to timely contact the Conservancy to discuss the possibilities of such opportunities.) Students are encouraged to participate in their school's work study program in order to maximize internship funding.

INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES

Summer interns will work under the supervision and direction of one or more members of the Conservancy's Board of Directors. The intern will implement a summer work plan developed jointly by the intern and the Board of Directors. Work plan activities will reflect the particular interests and skills of the intern and will allow the intern to assist the Conservancy in furthering its objectives in one or more of its four program areas.

The intern's summer work plan might include such things as (1) helping to plan and implement RiverWatch program activities; (2) working on The Voice Of The River newsletter; (3) providing assistance to the River Ranger Program; (4) assisting in target area land conservancy and protection activities including but not limited to preparing and distributing information about land conservancy and protection mechanisms, and helping to raise money for the protection of appropriate parcels of land; (5) working on public policy projects to protect and enhance the watershed's land and natural resources, to encourage sensible watershed planning and appropriate rural and village development, and to address adverse river and watershed environmental impacts; (6) helping with the planning and operation of the Conservancy's Speaker Series programs; (7) assisting in membership development activities; (8) undertaking web site maintenance activities; and (9) working on the annual Race For The River! fundraiser.

INTERN SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS

The Battenkill Conservancy-New York welcomes college, law school, and graduate school students who have an interest in environmental studies, rural planning, agricultural sciences, public policy, environmental law, regional and/or rural studies, and related fields to apply to its summer internship program.

Interns should be computer literate and able to carry out independent research and analysis and have good "people", writing and communication skills. The intern should also have his/her own car, since traveling in and around the watershed to meetings, and to other places will be necessary. Familiarity with a canoe and/or kayak would also be useful.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF INTERNSHIP

Internship activities and programs will be supervised and directed by one or more Conservancy Board members. A stipend of $2000 is anticipated to be paid to the 2001 summer intern. Reimbursement for mileage, travel, and other necessary and reasonable expenses will also be provided. Assistance in finding room and board, depending on the intern's needs and its local availability, may also be provided.

In cooperation with their academic institution, summer interns are eligible to receive funding from federally supported, work-study grants and potential interns are encouraged to investigate the availability of such funding.
